The New Old Town

The new old town in the centre of Frankfurt

Where once the old fell at William Tell and new life grew out of the ruins, this saying is now, in reverse, a keynote for the new Frankfurt Old Town: the Technical Town Hall built in the 1970s has given way to a new old town residential area. As part of construction project by the city of Frankfurt, 35 new buildings and the town hall have been constructed between the emperor’s cathedral and the Frankfurt city hall “Römer” in the middle of the old town.

Based on the city map before the destruction in the Second World War, small alleys and squares were newly laid out and framed with replicas, more precisely “creative new buildings”, and modern old town architecture. Some of the original remnants that survived the destruction and the decades have found their old place or an exciting new one.
